Mike Betts truly personified the 1977 Austin Peay football team, the only Governors squad to capture an Ohio Valley Conference championship in school history. The 5-10, 180-pound Centerville, TN native was known for his hard-hitting, aggressive play during his four season in the Govs’ secondary, which earned him first-team All-American and OVC “Defensive Player of the Year” in 1978. As a sophomore, he led APSU’s secondary with 83 tackles while also grabbing two interceptions. The following season Betts was involved in 100 tackles, leading the OVC in that category. As a result, he was an honorable mention All-American as a junior while earning first-team All-OVC honors in leading the 1977 Govs to that elusive league title. However, the best was yet to come. In his senior season, Betts again led the Govs in tackles (88) while garnering OVC “Defensive Player of the Year” honors as well as first-team Associated Press All-America. He received his bachelor’s degree in industrial technology in 1979. After graduation, he worked in sales for Clark Equipment, National Starch and Chemical and International Drillers Supply. He currently is a field representative for Tennessee Auto Recovery and a sales representative for Elite Aluminum.
