Tommy Head brought an aggressive style to the basketball court, that same attitude he now displays in the Tennessee legislature. The 6-7 Head played two seasons (1965-66, 1966-67) for the Govs and George Fisher after transferring from Cumberland College. As a junior, the center led the team in scoring and rebounding. His 18.2 scoring average ranked fifth in the OVC, and his 10.1 rebounds per game rated 10th. His 80.3 percent free-throw percentage ranked seventh. Head scoring 25 points and grabbed 21 rebounds against Western Kentucky and also was named to the OVC Holiday All-tournament team. As senior co-captain, he again led the team in scoring (17.1 ppg) and rebounding (9.4 rpg). His scoring average ranked seventh and rebounding average 12th in the OVC. He also ranked seventh in field-goal percentage (47.8 percent). He scored a season-best 33 points against Murray state and grabbed 21 rebounds against East Tennessee. He earned honorable All-OVC for his efforts. Since 1986, Head has served as Democratic representative for the 68th district in the Tennessee legislature. He has served on Finance, Ways and Means and Transportation committees. He is current chair of the Budget Subcommittee. His presence in Nashville also has been beneficial to Austin Peay. He has been instrumental in obtaining major funding for APSU campus facilities.
