CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Led by a game-high 32 points by Zyree Collins and a 20-point, 14-rebound Rashaud Marshall double-double, Austin Peay State University's basketball team earned a 96-94 exhibition win against IU Indy, Tuesday, on Gary Mathews Court at F&M Bank Arena.
Collins led four Governors in double figures with 32 points, as the sophomore went 12-for-14 from the charity stripe while adding three assists and a pair of steals. Marshall went 7-for-12 from the field in his 20-point performance, while grabbing five offensive boards in the victory. Freshman Felipe Minzer was third on the team with his 16 points and added eight rebounds and a team-high nine assists.
Tuesday's preseason contest featured 20 lead changes and 17 ties, with neither team leading by more than seven points. The Governors outscored the Jaguars in fast break points, 29-7, and held IUI to just 20% on a quartet of makes from three-point range.
Cam Ryans scored the game's first points on a layup on Austin Peay's second offensive trip down the court, but the Jaguars scored six-straight points while holding the Govs to just 1-for-5 from the field in the opening 3:10 of the game. Following the slow start from the field, Collins' first three of the night sparked a run of five-straight makes from the field, with Marshall making an aerial layup on a feed from Collins before proceeding to posterize a Jaguars' forward which extended the APSU lead to two scores.
Collins scored four-straight APSU points midway through the opening half to regain the lead for APSU. A three-minute, 8-2 IUI run gave the Jaguars a three-point lead with under six minutes to play in the half. IUI went on to hold the lead for the next four minutes, until a 6-2 APSU run tied the game at 42. The Jaguars took a 45-44 lead into the half after connecting on a layup and splitting a trip to the free throw line.
The Jaguars forced 15 Austin Peay turnovers in the first half, with the Govs forcing 13; however, the two were tied in points off turnovers at 13 apiece. Marshall and Collins also led the Govs with 13 points apiece, with Marshall pacing the Govs with eight boards.
Minzer connected on his fourth bucket of the game to begin the second half and return the lead back to APSU at 46-45. After trading buckets, the Jaguars regained the lead following back-to-back makes. With 12:23 remaining in the first half, Talon Todd connected on his first three-pointer of the game to tie the contest at 65 and – following scores by PJ Singleton and Bradley Floyd – hit his second trip to give APSU a 72-67 lead and force a IUI timeout.
Austin Peay went 9-for-11 from the field between 13:11-7:55 and led 78-77 with under eight minutes to play. Ten of the Govs' final 14 points came from the charity stripe, as Collins – battling with four fouls since the opening 70 seconds of the second half – scored nine-straight APSU points entering the final two minutes of play.
With 1.4 seconds remaining and the Govs leading 95-94, IU Indy took the ball sideline out of bounds, but Collins' defense forced the Jaguar out of bounds. Collins then was fouled with 1.1 to play and made one of his attempts at the line to seal the two-point win.
