Career Recap: Austin Peay
As a junior in 2009 –
Lucas was a second-team All-OVC pick at catcher… led the Govs with a career-best .382 batting average, finishing 14th among all OVC hitters, and an 85-point improvement over his sophomore campaign (.297)… also led Govs in doubles (20), hit by pitch (12) and on-base percentage (.474)… played in 49 of 52 contests, starting 46 at catcher… was even better in OVC play, posting a team-best .435 batting average with two home runs and 14 RBI… behind the plate caught 21 percent of would-be base stealers and committed only four errors in 309 chances (.987 fielding percentage)… had seven three-hit outings (18 multi-hit outings total) with five three-hit performances in OVC play… had six hit streaks of four games or more during season, including a seven-game hit streak and a later eight-game hit streak… was 2-for-3 with two RBI against Cleveland State, Feb. 27… was 4-for-11 with four RBI and five doubles in Iowa series, March 6-8… hit .522 during seven-game hit streak, March 13-22, but recorded only three RBI… went 3-for-4 against Eastern Kentucky, March 22, just prior to streak’s end… later had an eight-game hit streak, April 18-28, during which he batted .560 with three home runs and nine RBI… led Govs to first victory against Vanderbilt , April 21, with a 2-for-3, two-RBI performance that included a two-run home run… went 3-for-3 with 3 RBI and a home run in second game of Southeast Missouri series, April 25… had another three-hit outing at Western Kentucky, April 28… posted consecutive three-hit games in Tennessee Martin doubleheader, May 2, finishing day 6-for-9… ended season with four-game hit streak… went 2-for-5 with two RBI at Lipscomb, May 12, followed by 4-for-10 series at Murray State, May 15-16.

As a sophomore in 2008 – Lucas appeared in 51 contests, starting 40 times at catcher and five starts as designated hitter… batted .297 (third-best on team) with four home runs and 31 RBI… posted .290 batting average with 18 RBI in OVC play… started season off slowly with a hit in 10 of first 25 games and average stood at .203 after coming off bench against Morehead State, April 5… responded to benching by recording a hit in 17 of season’s final 26 contests, including 11 of his 13 multi-hit outings… improved average 94 points over those final outings to finish season with average at its highest point (.297)… batted .305 with 18 RBI (both 2nd on team) in April, including three of his four home runs… began season-ending stretch with 2-for-4 outing against Morehead State, April 5… followed that with 3-for-4, two RBI performance at Tennessee, April 8, including a double and home run… had season-best four RBI outing in series-opener against Tennessee Tech, April 19, going 2-for-5… batted .394 in May with eight RBI… had three consecutive multi-hit outings to begin month – two hits in series finale against Tennessee Martin, May 4, followed by three-hit outings against both Middle Tennessee, May 5, and Evansville, May 7… defensively, caught runner in 14 of 62 stolen-base attempts (22.6 percent caught stealing).

As a freshman in 2007 – Lucas appeared in 36 games, including 24 starts… started 18 games at catcher, including 13 OVC starts… usually started second games of doubleheaders at catcher… also started six games as designated hitter… his .323 batting average ranked third on team among batters with 90 or more at bats… his four home runs ranked fourth on team… his .444 batting average with runners in scoring position ranked first among Govs… consistent performer batted .326 with two home runs and 12 RBI during OVC play… got off to slow start but bat came alive at Middle Tennessee… blasted two home runs and drove in six… followed that up with three-hit performance next night against Evansville… had two more hits in first game of Morehead State series and finished off series with three hits, including a home run, and four RBI… had two more hits against Vanderbilt in next contest, making him 12 for 21 (.571 batting average) during six-game stretch… blasted key home run in second game of Southeast Missouri series when Govs moved into first place in OVC… also had clutch two-run RBI pinch single in bottom of ninth to tie up final game of SEMO series… had two hits, including double, against UT Martin in second of series… suffered thumb injury that kept him out of Eastern Illinois series… collected pinch hit against Jacksonville State in Govs’ second OVC tourney contest… was 1-for-6 with an RBI during the Nashville Regional… lone hit of the tourney was Govs first hit in tournament opener, a second-inning single against Vanderbilt… had a sacrifice fly in elimination game against Vanderbilt.

Under head coach Doug Polston, batted .574 with 18 home runs and a school-record 68 RBI… named to Tennessee Sport Writers Association Class AAA All-State Team… Tennessee Baseball Report 2006 Most Valuable Player and first-team All-State selection… as a junior, he was among Tennessee’s top 10 in walks (29)… he was selected to the 2004 Tennessee Baseball Report’s Super Sophomore team after hitting .394 with 29 RBI… three-sport athlete at Halls HS, also played football and basketball, holds school record for touchdown passes and passing attempts.
